Show Notes

Part of the Intro e-mail from Ken to me:

Interestingly enough, through listening to your podcasts I've noticed more than a few parallels between my film, "Headcase" and your feature film which you occasionally speak of, "Jake Forgotten." Headcase began filming in 2008, it was made for $50,000, the story has somewhat of a mob element to it but instead of shooting with the JVC GY HD100, I took the HVX 200 P2 route.

Fire Walk With Me club scene notes from the webverse.

Heathers is the movie that ushered in dark comedy.

Seth Worley at RedGiant TV is amazing. We talk about Exploding Man as a great tutorial.

We talk a lot about fxPHD and how great it is.

Ken mentions the Neat Video noise reduction plugin.

Headcase is also a Jordan Entertainment production.

Show Notes

You should go listen to Ruining it for Everyone right now.

Paul likes the Thinktank Backpack. I looked at the Shoulder Bag and it looks great for camera gear. I've always loved the STM Messenger and -- of course Timbuk2.

Norman wrote The Lean Forward Moment and it's even on the Kindle. Of course, so is Avid Agility which is a must-own.

There are no other show notes, other than this: I call crime procedurals "Semen in the Ketchup" shows, because my friend John D calls them that.

Playa Zipolite in Mexico is awesome, but you have to take a camioneta to get there. The updated Lonely Planet actually speaks better of Zipolite, but the reviews are rough at best.

Headcase was shot on the Panasonic HVX 200, but Jake Forgotten was shot on the JVC GY-HD100u and required a special deck. Both were shot at 720p24.

Once again, we talk about Aaah! Zombies!! and how it was shot on a Viper.

Seth Worley at RedGiant TV is amazing. We talk about Exploding Man as a great tutorial.

Mine was shot on the Nikon D3100 which does 1080p24 and looks great.

Final Cut Pro 7 can be installed on Lion, according to most people.

We talk a lot about fxPHD and how great it is.

Headcase is also a Jordan Entertainment production.

Show Notes

The mom on Burn Notice smokes... a lot.

Matt Nix, the creator of Burn Notice, is very retro. But he's also on Twitter.

Avid ScriptSync is great, if a bit expensive.

We talk about The Bannen Way. Somehow, Zack found the editing job on a Craig's List ad and worked for free on the original cut. Guy Ritchie's Snatch was a big influence on the film.

I want to edit something with Rain Wilson and with Bruce Campbell. And Bruce is on Burn Notice, so Zack is a jerk for beating me to that goal. Bruce actually wrote If Chins Could Kill, not "talk" -- as I mistakingly said on the show.

Zack watches Breaking Bad and The Walking Dead and Dexter and House (because his wife loves it).

He's getting into Strike|Back from Cinemax.

I watch Mad Men and Norman loves Nurse Jackie.

Zack also likes American Horror Story.

Everyone talks about Luther. It's in iTunes right now for about $10.

We talk about Sherlock on BBC and I mention my Moriarty is from Star Trek.

Show Notes

The Final Cut X Migration POLL is interesting. Also, Final Cut Pro X is worth a second look is a good article.

Intelligent Assistant's (and Philip Hodgetts) Project Xto7 and Event Manager X.

Randy Ubilos and Final Cut Pro is a nice comparison to Avid Media Composer 6, as Apple doesn't really share anything openly -- like Avid does (in recent years).

iMovie film gets Honerable Mention at Sundance and Scott keeps mentioning Tarnation from a few years ago. Meanwhile, several films have used iMovie and been in Sundance.

FCXP.Tv top 60 requests for Final Cut Pro X by @RichardTaylorTV

Learning to love Final Cut Pro X is a great article that helps everyone understand why #fcpx is so important as a future-facing product.

The awesome Michael Cavanaugh works at Tippet Studio, which I may have called Tippet Studios a few times.

Avid Market Cap is interesting, to say the least and a crazy forum thread on Avid's history.

Skype Chat Log

Kanen Flowers added Bob Russo, Scott Simmons, Frank Jonen, Paul Del Vecchio to this conversation

[7:59:27 PM] Kanen Flowers: Hiya all. We'll start in a minute or two, I'm waiting on the apparently-paid-by-the-hour clenaing crew to finish.
[8:00:01 PM] Kanen Flowers: Scott -- you mind doing a backup call-recorder thing?
[8:00:16 PM] Scott Simmons: sure
[8:00:51 PM] Kanen Flowers: "I sure do mind" or "Sure, no problem!" :)
[8:01:18 PM] Scott Simmons: sure no problem … it just installed a call recorder update
[8:01:33 PM] Paul Del Vecchio: Scott Simmons... he's from Nashville
[8:01:56 PM] Scott Simmons: YEP he sure is. That's about all we can say about him that rhymes
[8:02:01 PM] Scott Simmons: he he
[8:02:08 PM] Kanen Flowers: http://dl.dropbox.com/u/602830/ThatPostRap.mp3
[8:02:18 PM] Kanen Flowers: (we might mention it on the show)
[8:02:19 PM] Paul Del Vecchio: haha
[8:02:37 PM] Kanen Flowers:
[8:03:00 PM] Scott Simmons: I'm mother fucking mixing DNxHD 145 and Pro Res LT mxf right not bitches
[8:12:12 PM] Kanen Flowers: muting the fucking cleaning crew. apologies.
[8:12:28 PM] Frank Jonen: keep in mind, no witnesses
[8:19:53 PM] Kanen Flowers: Upcoming question: Supported file formats and video sizes.
[8:20:37 PM] Kanen Flowers: Upcoming Question: Tabbed interface.
[8:23:46 PM] Kanen Flowers: Explain: RED 4k support with Avid
[8:29:45 PM] Kanen Flowers: Upcoming question: Other NLEs that support larger and non-standard video sizes?
[8:43:59 PM] Kanen Flowers: Upcoming topics (if time permits): Avid hardware vs. 3rd party hardware, new look (and tabbed interface stuff), artist color! and surround sound!
[8:44:11 PM] Frank Jonen: Link to NVidia drivers http://www.nvidia.com/object/quadro-macosx-256.02.25f01-driver.html
[8:50:09 PM] Paul Del Vecchio: http://www.cubix.com/content/gpu-xpander
[8:50:45 PM] Kanen Flowers: "Indiana Jones Style Satchel" OMFG/ROFLMAO
[9:01:54 PM] Kanen Flowers: for later -- www.recruiterbox.com/bob_avaj_video
[9:03:57 PM] Bob Russo: I'd love to get back to prores support and red workflow
[9:24:11 PM] Frank Jonen: me too
[9:24:17 PM] Kanen Flowers: "It's like moving from Windows ME to OS X" (more gold from Jonen)
[9:24:36 PM] Frank Jonen: this will come back to haunt me one day
[9:25:52 PM] Kanen Flowers: "Single Click Superbin-y thing" from Nashville
[9:35:04 PM] Kanen Flowers: I'm going to wrap up after Paul finishes complementing Avid...
[9:35:36 PM] Frank Jonen: almond flavored KY, but not quite yet :)
[9:39:36 PM] Kanen Flowers: VINSERT and BOVERWRITE do not exist in FCPX
[9:40:16 PM] Scott Simmons: it's a sad day without VINSERT and BOVERRITE
[9:43:10 PM] Kanen Flowers: We will do a MC6 30 days later, I'm sure. :)
[9:43:30 PM] Frank Jonen: not an MC7?
[9:44:08 PM] Scott Simmons: SOMEONE out there has MC7
[9:44:21 PM] Scott Simmons: and FCP XI
[9:44:28 PM] Frank Jonen: Send Jack Bauer
[9:54:28 PM] Kanen Flowers: Show Note: 601/709 import settings for "fast import ProRes" footage (with matching framerate and project type) - Steps: 1) Link to AMA 2) Transcode
[9:55:23 PM] Frank Jonen: just 2 bits: Why is RED footage not treated like in Red Cine X, where you pick the readout / processing res - but instead you have to transcode first?
[9:55:49 PM] Frank Jonen: 2nd. What's Peter Jackson using for editing Hobbit since that's stereo 5K at 48fps?
[9:57:29 PM] Scott Simmons: you don't have to transcode first in Avid you can AMA to R3D but it's just not robust enough for real hardcore editing. RedCine X is optimized for R3D
[9:58:36 PM] Frank Jonen: yeah if AMA is so bitchsuggles then using the Red SDK direcly would make more sense IMO
[9:59:30 PM] Scott Simmons: but AMA does use red SDK doesn't it?
[9:59:52 PM] Frank Jonen: I mean in the way of grabbing lower readouts like other Red DSK tools do
[10:00:09 PM] Frank Jonen: SDK. not the French banker
[10:01:48 PM] Scott Simmons: oh I see. and yes there are some apps that do seem to playback R3Ds much nicer

Important Stuff

Write a review of the show in iTunes and be automatically entered to win free prizes. Show your love for the show and we will show the love back, by giving you cool stuff. It's easy, just Click Here to rate the show.

ByWord: Don't be confused by it's simplicity... it's more than "distraction free" or "minimalist" writing. Byword really removes much friction when writing Markdown and rich text. I literally use Byword every single day.

Final Draft: Scruffy Thinking is sponsored by Final Draft, Inc. publishers of Final Draft - the number-one selling scriptwriting software in the world. If you'd like $60 off the retail price -- ONLY $189 for the full version! -- go to finaldraft.com and enter code ST2011 and purchase your copy today.

Show Notes

The game industry is smaller than the movie industry. The average movies spends 22 weeks in post production. According to about.com, the average masala (big budget) Bollywood film is $2 million, but many people make $3/day -- except the lead actor, who gets 40% of the film's budget.

Sketchbook Mobile is a big deal.

Scott Sigler is a guest on the next Scruffy Thinking, where he talks more about his process and getting your creative work out there.

Wil Shipley article: Farming vs. Mining is a great entry. Wil was also on a recent episode Scruffy Thinking.

Our guests are Mark Stolaroff and Paul Del Vecchio.

We ask the question,

What is the future of filmmaking?

Hosted by Kanen Flowers

(John) Kanen Flowers is the creator of That Post Show and has a blog. He is currently trying to raise finishing funds for his own feature film, JAKE FORGOTTEN.

With Guests

Mark Stoleroff

Mark is an independent producer in LA and the Founder of No Budget Film School, a series of classes designed specifically for the no-budget filmmaker. He was formerly a principal of IFC's finishing funds company, Next Wave Films.

Paul del Vecchio

Paul is an Award Winning Director from NY, has a short film on George Romero’s Diary of the Dead DVD. His last feature film, FOREVER, won Audience Award for Best Feature Film at the Long Island Big Fish Film Festival.

Errata

Also...

Mark Stolaroff doesn't use Skype. We recorded this episode using his phone and connected Mark into the conference call over Skype. The first half of the podcast has a few noises and artifacts, but clears up toward the end. The conversation is very much worth hearing and I believe you will fall in love with Mark, as I did so many years ago.

Show Topic

On this Episode, we ask the question,

Top 10 Films

We start with a chat about our favorite movies, just to set the tone of the conversation

The lists are not in exact order, but are close to it. The real problem with any kind of list is picking just ten. Moods change and films come into our minds based on environment, situation and other factors.

Kanen's List

Three Days of the Condor

Shawshank Redemption

Superman (the original)

Unbreakable

Star Wars

Godfather Part II

Ran

Fight Club

Heathers

Brazil

Honorable Mention: Real Genius, Back to the Future, The Matrix, Dark City, Terminator, Seven Samurai, The Game and Eyes Wide Shut.

Top 10 Television Shows

Kanen decided to put together a list of the top 10 television shows ever made (according to him), just for kicks.

The Wire

The X-Files

Deadwood

Breaking Bad

Re:Genesis

Mad Men

Dexter

Freaks and Geeks

Curb Your Enthusiasm

Star Trek: Deep Space Nine

Honorable mention: 30 Rock, Arrested Development, The Sopranos, Californication, Fringe, Nurse Jackie and Six Feet Under.

Norman's List

2001

Godfather and Godfather 2

Day for Night

8-1/2

Dr. Strangelove

Breathless

Out of Sight

Play Time

Scott Pilgrim

Mike's List

American Graffiti - have never found a film so rich in the atmosphere of sound - truly one of my favs

Good Will Hunting - a very human, flawed and moving movie for me

Blow Out - Just love this movie - it's dense with many good stuff

Stand By Me - Unconsciously affected my visual taste without knowing it. Wide angle lens

Inglorious Bastards - My favorite Tarantino movie - doesn't sell action figures or beer...

What's Eating Gilbert Grape - For years was just a movie I saw and wished I could have worked on

Jaws - it is my classic along with Close Encounters of the Third Kind

Citizen Kane - a cliche but I have much love for this movie and story behind it

Star Wars - changed my life more than any other movie ever… asthetically, sound-wise - dramatically - plot-wise - design - values - knowledge - not just as movie but as an entity of creativity… for the time period of youth you could not simply replay it through a vhs or dvd...you had to visualize it… listen to the story record or the NPR radio drama… and close your eyes.. And you have the creations to based your material on… but the freedom to move them and visualize how you’d like to… I think that’s why Star Wars had such and impact in the economy of filmmaking… that goes beyond the general film itself….

Bourne Ultimatum - quick, mtv style cutting done right...

Back to the Future is my bookend of the perfect outlined movie with plot points hitting the syd field guide dead on - where as Magnolia is my opposite end bookend... it is a film I find organic each time I watch it... it inspires and haunts

Favorite Guilty Action flick - Point Break

Breakfast Club / Ferris Bueller / Sixteen Candles - teaches how to do comedy right

Halloween - original best film score love the asthetic... highest grossing independent film until Pulp Fiction/blair witch

Fav docs - Hoop Dreams - American Movie - King of Kong

Questions

The tools

With the RED and other HD cameras, there is a race to the highest resolution!

With all the hullabaloo over Final Cut Pro X, I have to ask: Does the tool matter? And, if so, when?

What about Story?

Web Series. Indie Film. Making money… With 30 Rock joking, "Transformers 5, Written by No One" making millions… is it possible to work and earn a living doing low-budget films (or web series) with a great story?

Comics and Film

So many comics and graphic novels have come to the big screen. When I was a kid, you were a dork or geek for reading them. Today, that might still be true, but they certainly are making an impression (sometimes a bad one) on the big screen.

Built in storyboards

Plot and characters already known

Familiarity of the journey

Nothing really new in the story?

Topics

We discuss the release of Final Cut Pro X, which was released June 21, 2011 in the Mac App Store. 24 hours later, we discuss what Final Cut Pro X means to professional editors, filmmakers, Avid and Premiere users and people familiar with iMovie.

Thanks, in part, to DigitalRebellion's FAQ for many of the items we discuss in our "Lightning Round" of questions.

An Aside

Anyone have a deck that can import ProHD HDV™/DV footage from a JVC-GYHD camera (c.f. pro.jvc.com)?

I need about 20 HDV/ProHDV tapes ingested.

Contact me if you do. I can send you the HDV tapes.

Recorded in early 2009

Moderated by: (John) Kanen Flowers

With Co-hosts:

Five people. Five opinions. A civil discussion about Avid and Final Cut's market share, how much editors get paid for both systems, houses who are installing Avid and Final Cut. The discussion later turns to Adobe Premiere, Apple Color, Assimilate Scratch and how they are poised in the industry, along with a conversation about supporting the RED Camera.

Approximately 2 hours long. Or, as mentioned on the show, "at least two train rides.

In this episode, we ask the questions:

Is Avid "losing market share

Is Avid behind Final Cut in features?

Has Avid's market share actually increased?

Is Avid or Final Cut the "Industry Standard" today?

Can Avid or Final Cut "gain market share" in the industry?

Hollywood vs. Indie Film - who owns each market?

Can you make more money with one NLE or the other?

What about the lagging editor systems, like Adobe Premiere?

Michael Scott, known to the internet as Dorkman and the co-creator of the popular Star Wars fan-film, Ryan vs. Dorkman and Ryan vs. Dorkman 2.

David Stripinis is on Twitter at twitter.com/davidstripinis
Michael Scott is on Twitter at twitter.com/dorkmanscott

Note: We have moved the show to AAC (iTunes) format, from MP3. Plus, every modern system can play AAC (or, MP4 or M4A files).

This episode -- subtitled "That EPIC F---ing Post Show" -- is a discussion of screenwriting, directing, making movies, worrying about budget and just about everything else. We even squeeze in a comment or two about Final Draft. David "laughs out loud, five times." We discuss M. One is apparently offensive to David, even though he likes the script "I WANT TO F* YOUR SISTER."

Everyone likes Britney Spears naked in a sauna and Patton Oswalt's evil death bed.

Meanwhile, Michael doesn't really brag about creating Ryan vs. Dorkman and David doesn't actually brag about knowing Jim Cameron. John tries to brag, but doesn't find anything to brag about.

It's that kind of show.

Movies mentioned on the show:

Armageddon, Unbreakable, Deep Impact, Twister, The Bucket List, Epic Movie, In Bruges, The Sixth Sense, Memento, Signs, Beverly Hills Chihuahua, Teeth, Saw, Harold and Kumar, Stranger Than Fiction, 3 Days of the Condor, SuperBad, The Breakfast Club, Never Back Down, Crash, Million Dollar Baby, Casino Royale, Quantum of Solace, Jaws, Terminator 2, Children of Men, David Fincher's anything

Television mentioned on the show:

True Blood, Dexter, Six Feet Under, Heroes (of course), Dollhouse, Firefly, LOST, The X-Files, Dr. Horrible's Sing-a-long Blog, Big Bang Theory and Madmen

All the talk about Michael's trailer is related to this Youtube video.
