Show Notes

Owen bumps his mic constantly (or something causes his mic to bump). I've done my best to make it not annoying, but -- you know, it's a mic that bumps, so... I think the show is still fun and worth it for the content.

Also, this show was recorded around August, 2011. So, it happened befor Louis CK released his $5 album, which is why we didn't discuss it in the show.

Archipelago

There are no other show notes. It's meta. Plus, it's an older show and I decided to just edit the damn thing and not spend another hour writing show notes. ;P

Show Notes

Uses This "The Setup" is literally the best.

The RED Footage contest was called "OpenCut".

That Media Show on Blip.tv, which had Darren Criss -- who is now on Glee.

We watch Portlandia and talk about American Movie and how my my Director of Photography watched it every day for a year.

Maggie goes mental and talks about building a robot. The genesi motherboard - which is an "open", ARM-based, low-power system. It uses a Dagu platform from RobotShop. We also mention QBO, an open source project for recognizing things which runs on the open source ROS platform from Willow Garage.

Out of Control by Kevin Kelly is quite good, but dated.

Peter Norvig edit distance solution, along with my crazy github version in newLisp.

Show Notes

Hello, this is Kanen and I wanted to take a moment out of my normal podcasting routine to let you know that new shows are being released next week, but I am taking a few days more before releasing them out of respect for what happened this week.

Steve Jobs passed away on October 5, 2011.

I, like many people, felt a strong connection to Steve, not just because I admire him -- although that is certainly the case -- and not just because he changed my life with the tools he helped create -- although, that too happened -- but also because I had the amazing fortune to meet the man on three different occasions.

The first time, I was in my early twenties and was using NeXT computers and software. The second, I was at the opening of one of the first Apple Stores. The third time was during a pitch to Apple for them to acquire a technology I had created for Apple (which, by the way, they did not acquire).

The memory I have of Steve, the one that really sticks, is from the Apple Store in 2001. He was standing like a proud father, completely inconspiciously, against a display of Macintosh systems, at the side of the store. If you didn't know he was Steve, you'd never have known to say hello.

I walked up to him. He reached out and shook my hand. "Hi, I'm Steve."

I said, "Glad to see you again."

He seemed to search his memory and vaguely remember me from before... I saw a glint of recognition.

I said, "I know a lot of people tell you this, but ... I've admired your work, your taste, your dedication. I've used your computers since I was a kid and, when I left Microsoft in 1995, I never used Windows again, nor do I plan to do so in the future."

He smiled.

I said, "I hold you up among some of the greatest influences in my life and I'm glad to have you and the late Richard Feynman in my lifetime. I feel fortunate and I feel inspired by both of you."

He looked at me, serious as anyone ever has and said, "I am deeply happy to be in such good company."

I shook his hand again and said "thank you," and moved on, to let others say hello to Steve.

Everyone has a memory of Steve. Some of us were fortunate enough to look into his eyes and see the bright, shining light of hope and determination.

My thoughts go out to his friends, his family and the millions of people whose lives were touched by Steve. None of us will ever be the same because of the things Steve helped create and -- for me personally -- not a day will go by that I don't think of Steve and the wonderful future he has given me and everyone I care about.

Thank you, Steve.

This episode was recorded in studio, with mics provided by John Foster (thanks!). We discuss development, moving to San Francisco and World of Warcraft. Follow @ScruffyThinking on Twitter!

This show was recorded live, in a conference room, during an unexpectedly large gathering outside, which you can hear in the background. Also, Wil sometimes mumbles... so, there's that. But, I promise, the show is fun, hopefully interesting, and certainly worth dealing with the background noise.

Also, the show is largely unedited, which is pretty cool.

Show Notes

Victor pronounces his name, kah-hee-ow. We discuss Philip Rosedale of Second Life -- Coffee and Power and the Coffee Bar SF -- where @wilshipley hangs out as well as Philz Coffee and Blue Bottle Coffee.

We all use Levelator to fix audio levels in our podcasts. Victor uses the Aphex 240 Interface when he records. Apparently, the Apogee Ensemble is also pretty good.

I used to use NeXTStep for a long time, but I also used OpenBSD and some Linux. I also owned a Mac G4 Cube.

My notes

This is meant to be a frank and direct discussion about Venture Funding, the way the world has changed and what people should think about in a world with Social Networks, iOS and the Cloud.

Speaking of purposefulness... TED and, aside from that, did you see my Thailand presentation?

How has it changed over the last 10 years?

The Foundation: Rose (Guy from Second Life Cafe)

How has the economy impacted the venture world?
What is hot today?
What kind of startups are being funded?

Is it less expensive to start a company in 2011 than 2001?

So you are not totally diluged with people asking for money, talk a little about what kinds of things interest you at August and the process.
